Even though the first, real university degree at the Faculty of Oenology began with the creation of the National Diploma in Oenology in 1956, the Bordeaux School of Oenology has been offering its continuing education courses to professionals working in the wine-growing industry since 1905.
The National Diploma in Oenology is the true pulse of the educational programmes. It aims at giving students who have already obtained a bachelor's degree in one of the fundamental sciences (biology, chemistry, agronomy, ...) the necessary tools to be capable of carrying out the tasks performed by a technical production manager, namely in wine processing and analysis.
The Master's in Oenology and Viti-Vinicultural Environment gives the Faculty of Oenology the opportunity to train students to become competent technical, environment, and production managers (vocational option in environmental management, quality assurance, HACCP, the treatment of effluents, organic viticulture, …) or in the field of Research & Development (research option which leads to the Doctorate programme and employment in public or private laboratories.)
The Faculty of Oenology also offers students with a Bac+2 education level the possibility of being integrated more rapidly into the work force with the Vocational Degree Speciality in Vine and Wine Careers and its three options: Quality Management, Company Management, and Oeno-inspector.
With the goal of offering classes to wine-growers, since 1905 the Faculty of Oenology organizes many yearly training courses available through Continuing Education, as well as the University Diploma in Wine-tasting Aptitude (DUAD) which has been training people working in the the wine-growing industry since 1974.
Finally, the University Diploma Initiation to Oenology (DUIO) allows the layman to discover the basis of viticulture and oenology without having had prior training in scientific fields.
All of these programmes give access to recent educational equipment of the highest quality (classrooms for sensory analysis, microbiological analysis, computer lab, ...) as well as a library well-equipped for reference to documentation and research.
The success of Bordeaux's School of Oenology is based on its Professors' strong involvement in the research done in the on-site laboratories. In addition, numerous outside contributors from the wine-growing industry bring their hands-on experience and know-how to reinforce the quality of these programmes.
